A former teaching assistant in Illinois has admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old student while she worked at his school, according to disturbing new reports.
Allyssa Gustafson, 24, entered a guilty plea Monday for aggravated criminal sexual abuse stemming from an innapropritate relationship with a student at Circle Academy in Urbana, The News-Gazette reported.
She had allegedly engaged in at least five sexual encounters with the teen boy beginning in March 2019 when he was enrolled at the school, which specializes in teaching children with “behavioral and emotional challenges,” news station WAND-TV reported.
Police said that she communicated with him over Facebook Messenger and Snapchat, and sent snapshots of herself in a bathing suit and lingerie.
The boy’s mom saw the photos and recalled seeing her at their home but was under the impression that she was a high school senior, the newspaper reported.
Gustafson was charged in November 2019 for sexually assaulting the student.
But as part of the deal this week, prosecutors dropped a more serious charge of criminal sexual assault, the outlet reported.
Gustafson’s attorney plans to request at her sentencing Oct. 3 that his client serve probation and community service, the newspaper reported.
But prosecutors are pushing for the former teacher to serve time, the outlet reported. Under state law, sexual abuse of a minor carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
