A former Green Bay high school staffer who admitted she had sex with a 16-year-old student has been sentenced to half a year in jail.
According to Fox affiliate WLUK in Green Bay, Courtney Roznowski, 32, had previously pleaded no contest to one count of exposing intimate parts to a child.
More serious charges had previously been dropped because investigators learned she was not under contract with the Green Bay School District when she had sex with the student victim.
The presiding judge also ordered Roznowski to write apology letters and to serve three years of probation in addition to six months in jail.
“I accept responsibility for what I did, and I know what I did was wrong.”
“You are, frankly, the nightmare of every parent. Because what a parent assumes is that their child is in safe environment with trusting people,” Judge Donald Zuidmulder told Roznowski in court about her sex encounters with the high school student.
“While I did not initiate the relationship, I should have put an end to it once I realized that the messages being sent to me were from a student at the school,” Roznowski said, noting that she has been attending counseling and stopped drinking.
According to PEOPLE, Roznowski had been drinking heavily and had “extensive personal issues” in her life at the time she entered into the illicit relationship with the teen victim in summer 2019.
The victim had told police that “it is every kid’s dream to do a teacher” while initially denying a relationship. He later admitted to having a sexual relationship with Roznowski.
An employee at the school told investigators that school staff members had been talking about how Roznowski was “unusually close” with a 16-year-old student she was often seen escorting through the halls
Roznowski admitted to investigators she had sex with the high school student, but had initially reached out to him intending to mentor the victim. She also told investigators she was “really drunk” during an encounter and had vomited in his house.
According to Metro, the victim told investigators he had two sexual encounters with Roznowski, who told him that he was “special and deserved special things.”
Roznowski had told investigators that she loved the student “in a way I didn’t want to see anything bad happen to him,” Metro reported.
The high school student was younger than the age of consent in Wisconsin when he had sex with Roznowski.
She later allegedly admitted to having sex with the boy, although she said she only intended to be his mentor.
According to ABC affiliate WBAY, conditions of Roznowski’s three-year probation includes no employment with minors, sobriety, and no contact with anyone under age 18.
She will receive credit for time served and is eligible for work release.
According to WLUK, Zuidmulder told Roznowski he would have likely sentenced her to prison if the dropped charges had stood.
“Whatever punishment I impose on you, I assume that the humiliation and embarrassment you’ve caused your mother and father is more punishment that you will carry than what I could impose on you,” the judge said.
An employee at Southwest told police that Roznowski would escort the teen through hallways and was “unusually close with him.”
