Former President Obama to release first volume of memoir on Nov. 17

Former President Obama will release his new memoir in two volumes, with the first coming out shortly after Election day, his publisher, Penguin Random House, announced Thursday morning.

The 768-page first volume, titled “A Promised Land,” will be released on Nov. 17, two weeks after the presidential election.

The book, which will be published in 25 languages, will cover his political life pre-presidency, his historic 2008 presidential campaign and his first term in office.

In the book, “We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his Cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act,” the publisher said in their announcement.

The second volume of the 44th president’s memoir has not been given a release date.

“I’ve spent the last few years reflecting on my presidency, and in ‘A Promised Land’ I’ve tried to provide an honest accounting of my presidential campaign and my time in office: the key events and people who shaped it; my take on what I got right and the mistakes I made; and the political, economic, and cultural forces that my team and I had to confront then — and that as a nation we are grappling with still,” the former commander-in-chief said in a statement released by his publisher Thursday.

“In the book, I’ve also tried to give readers a sense of the personal journey that Michelle and I went through during those years, with all the incredible highs and lows. And finally, at a time when America is going through such enormous upheaval, the book offers some of my broader thoughts on how we can heal the divisions in our country going forward and make our democracy work for everybody — a task that won’t depend on any single president, but on all of us as engaged citizens,” he continued.

Obama and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, signed a lucrative book deal estimated to be worth over $60 million with Penguin Random House in 2017 for the rights to their memoirs.

The former first lady’s book was the best selling book of 2018 and remained on the New York Times’ bestseller list for over a year.
